Former First Lady Michelle Obama did not attend the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter on Thursday. While all other living former presidents and their spouses were present at Washington National Cathedral, including Barack Obama, Michelle Obama’s absence was notable. She sent her condolences through a statement from her spokesperson, Crystal Carson, but did not explain her absence. “Mrs. Obama sends her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family and everyone who admired the remarkable former president,” the statement read. Reports suggest Michelle Obama remained in Hawaii due to a scheduling conflict, where she had been on an extended vacation.
State funerals for former presidents often bring together prominent political figures and dignitaries. During the service, Barack Obama was seen speaking with former presidents, including Donald Trump and Bill Clinton. Trump even shook hands with Mike Pence, despite their political fallout after the 2020 election. Leaders will gather again on January 20 for the inauguration of Donald Trump’s second presidential term. It’s unclear if Michelle Obama will attend that event.
